If they choose to they get to come home for a couple weeks. Most go home but others travel to other countries or meet their families in places like Hawaii, ect. That's for the Army who are typically deployed 12-15 months. I can't speak for the other branches, some do get to do 4 days to Qatar or other places. I'm sure there will be others who will pop in and add to this.

A couple of my buddies went to Australia for R&R from Iraq - of course, you need a passport to do so. I just came back home to Texas for 2 weeks.

The military R&R program just got better after I left Afghanistan this year (amazing this year is almost over). You are no longer charged personal leave to go on R&R. With R&R, you can go anywhere in the world that you want and the government will play for the flight. Yes, the majority of servicemembers go home to their dependents but many go to Australia, Brazil, Hawaii, Germany (for the soldiers that are not stationed there and you need to go to Edelweiss). The 4-day Qatar program was put on hold when I was downrange and I think its been re-implemented due to a adequate participation. Some reasons were that not many females were participating and they didnt want them to go alone. And some soldiers rather use the 4-days than 2-weeks to save leave. Also, R&R is not an option during deployment. Your command will ensure that you take it.

My son's R & R should be coming up in the next month, or so. He'd prefer to travel rather than come home. But he didn't get a passport before he deployed. Is there a way he can get one( a passport) while he's in Afgh. ? He came home for his R & R last time he was deployed, so I totally understand that he'd like to do some travelling. Other than his deployments, he has never been out of the states. Also can any of you suggest places he might go? Thanx

There was a program in Iraq for Soldiers to get passports while there. He can ask his chain of command to look into it - if it exists in Afghanistan the information will be available on the computerinformation networks in country, which his superiors have access to.

Europe, there is a lot to do and he can stay in hostels fairly cheap. He can also get around to most places by rail. Although it would probably be more fun if a buddy went with him.

Just a couple of links I've used in the past. There are a lot of good websites out there.

This is where I been going on the regular

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort - Garmisch, Germany

I do not know what FOB he is at but at Bagram we had a big post office there. He can talk to the clerk about applying for a passport. Since I am stationed overseas, my family members got no-fee passports but to travel we really need the regular ones.
