    Default Unit nick names

    Right over here we are divided into Regiments, Battalions, Corps etc. All of which have nicknames, for example: The Parachute Regt - Red Devils, RMP - Monkeys, Marines - Bootnecks/Cabbage Heads and so on and so forth. What nicknames do you give your units?

    Unit specific nicknames include;
    1-141 Infantry, 36ID "First Texas"
    1-18 Infantry, 1ID "Vanguard"
    2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, the "Dagger Brigade"
    1st Infantry Division "the Big Red One"
    82nd Airborne Division "All-American"
    101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles"
    Division Artillery, 101 ABN "Balls of the Eagle"

    US Special Forces - officially "Quiet Professionals", unofficially "Snake Eaters", "Green Berets"
    US Marines - officially "Leathernecks", unofficially Gyrenes, Devil Dogs, Jarheads, Seagoing Bellhops (derogatory)
    US Soldiers - unofficially "Dogfaces", "Billy Yank" (Civil War), "Doughboy" (WWI)

    There are MANY others, and as 2LT Papa Chop alluded to, many company sized units will adopt unofficial 'mascot' nicknames which can change with new commanders. These commomly reflect the unit's designation, i.e. -
    Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) - Highlanders, Headhunters, Hoplite, etc.
    Alpha Company - Alligators, Animal, Attack, etc.
    You get the idea.

    My Battalion (now disbanded) was called the "Border Rats" or the "Border Bunnies" by us... some of the locals had other names for us which were not so polite or macho... ROFL...

    Other Battalion Nick Names in the Irish Army;

    2 Bn - Vikings
    3 Bn - Bloods
    4 Bn - Rednecks (I just made that up, if any of my countrymen are reading this... spread the world... let the Yocals know we have a new Bn name for them... lol... )

    For some reason, GlobalSecurity or wiki said my old infantry battalion was nicknamed "Voodoo" but we never once called ourselves that. Some of the guys renamed our company the "Trunk Monkeys," named for the goofy commercial years ago where a person would push a button and a monkey would come out and kick the crap out of someone bothering them. We were mechanized, so we'd jump out of the back of a track and come whoop your ass. See the parallel?
